Sadly, I find the modern approaches to marketing and selling art is a rat race that takes precious time from the artist that should be involved in the creative process. It’s a different world and even I know an artist is now responsible to take the reins and go down the path of marketing. Currently, I am avoiding the craziness and focusing on learning all that I can before jumping in head first. FASO is providing a ton of resources to aid in this.

This is an important article and reflects reality for artists who want to sell their work. I’ve sold my work in a variety of venues, including self sales over the past couple of decades. It’s all about relationships to those who love your art and integrity/honesty in creating something that you, the artist, wants to convey to others whether they buy it or not. Just this morning, I wrote in my art journal something Clint has talked about many times: “Be so good they can’t ignore you.” I also wrote, “Never be rushed to create works for sale”. I want to create works that will stand the test of time - works that are more than a commodity. I can’t feel like I’m rushing to post and finish mediocre paintings so I can just increase the number of sales… that relates more to selling shoes on Amazon than to create something that I have an emotional connection to.

Love this article.

Have been a visual artist for 50 years at this point, essentially all of my adult life. There was a time a number of years ago when I worked with an agent (choose wisely) and was part of a double artist talk. Sharing the evening with another individual who had only recently started painting post retirement. I spoke about my research and work around a one hundred year old sea narrative and a companion solo museum Ex I was having in NB Canada. The other painter talked about applying computer sales techniques to selling their paintings. Many shared with me post the event wondering how such a topic related to art? A big lesson. This was not apples and oranges it was apples and food processors.

Interesting. Just a day or so ago I wrote a blog post (on my FASO account, of course) about how my expert salesmen husband and son talked about the importance of storytelling as an aspect of marketing.

This conversation came about after I visited the Autry Museum and my husband and I listened to artist Peter Adams talk about three of his paintings that are in the show, "Masters of the American West". What I thought of as interesting information about how, why, where and other background about the paintings, my husband was impressed as "salesmanship".

HMMMMMM..... ;)
